How to find your rasi and nakshatra
In Tamil astrology, "what is your rasi and nakshatra" is the very foundation. Panchangam, predictions and matching all rest on it. Let us look simply at how these are worked out.
What is a rasi?
The sign the Moon occupied at the moment of your birth is your rasi (moon sign). There are twelve in all — from Mesha to Meena. The rasi reflects your mind, emotions and nature.
What is a nakshatra?
The sky is divided into 27 nakshatras — from Ashwini to Revathi. The star the Moon occupied at birth is your birth nakshatra. Each nakshatra is split into four padas, and this also decides where your dasha begins.
How it differs from the western sun sign
The "sun sign" in newspapers is based on the Sun; the rasi in Tamil astrology is based on the Moon. So your Tamil rasi can differ from your English sun sign. In the Tamil system, the moon sign is the basis for predictions.
